Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College soccer team defeated Wiliam Peace in a 3-0 shutout to jumpstart this year's Kick Cancer event Sunday afternoon. With help from alumnae, friends and family, the Avenging Angels led a joint effort to collect over $2500 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation in honor of Assistant Coach Ashley Riggs. Pam Kohl, executive director of Komen's Triangle to the Coast branch, was on hand for a pregame presentation.
During the week leading up to Sunday's event, team leader Megan Amanatides spearheaded the sale of tee shirts to generate support for Coach Riggs. Following the game, the athletics department joined efforts with the team to host the Run for Riggs 5K and one mile fitness walk. Participants were asked to contribute a $10 donation.
In the opening seconds of the game, Meredith made an early run at the net and earned a corner kick for senior Jessie Davis. Davis launched a pass to the far corner of the goal, and Megan Luke pushed the ball into the box to give the Avenging Angels a quick 1-0 lead at 1:10.
In the 24th minute rookie Christa Jackson sent a cross to the right side of the field. Robin Moore drilled the ball into the net on the first touch to extend Meredith's lead to two.
Shortly after the break, the Avenging Angels created a scoring opportunity on a William Peace foul. Luke positioned her ball about 40 yeards from the net and sailed a pass up the middle. Danielle Lee collected the ball and punched in a goal to secure the win for Meredith.
All three Avenging Angel goalies saw time in the net today with the win going to senior keeper Kelsey Hopper. Pacer goalie Shannon Maddex tallied 10 saves in the loss.
Meredith hosts Methodist University Wednesday, October 16, in a USA South matchup. First kick is slated for 6 p.m. at the Avenging Angel turf field.
