Soccer Soars Past Panthers

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. - In a Senior Day event the Meredith College soccer team notched a 6-0 victory over the visiting Ferrum Panthers. A ceremonial first kick allowed two injured senior players to join their three classmates on the home turf one last time.

Sidelined by injury this season, midfielder Eliza Evans and goalie Margaret Wyatt returned to the field in today's senior celebration. Wyatt posed as a field player leaving starting keeper Kelsey Hopper in goal. Senior impact players Jessie Davis and Ila Torfin stepped into their usual roles as the Avenging Angels cruised past Ferrum.

Meredith set the tone for the day with an early score in the fifth minute. Davis passed a short ball from the corner to Christa Jackson. Jackson returned the favor, and Davis launched the ball to the upper right corner for the eventual game winner.

Jackson added her second assist with a long ball past the defense to Meredith McCarty. McCarty turned toward the box and drilled the pass to the left pocket for her third career goal.

The rookie played a ball in the next series to midfielder Robin Moore. Moore netted her first touch for Meredith's third point of the day.

Savannah Pierson subbed into the game in the 25th minute and connected with McCarty for a goal at 25:38. The score sent the Avenging Angels into the locker room with a four-point lead at the half.

In the final minutes of the match, Taylor Davis found Megan Amanatides near the goal. Amanatides punched the ball to the right corner for her first of two scores in the win.

Her second came just over two minutes later on a drive from defender Megan Luke. Amanatides finished the play with an attack toward the visiting keeper. She slipped the ball past the goalie for a netter in the lower right pocket.

Hopper earned the shutout for Meredith with a solo save in the net for Meredith. Backup goalie Sara McCaw and freshman Brook Verburg logged time in the box as well.

Ferrum goalie Caitlyn Deaton recorded the loss for the Panthers.

The Avenging Angels face N.C. Wesleyan Wednesday, October 30, in the final regular season contest. USA South tournament seedings will come down to the final play date for the competitive league.
