Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Greensboro College soccer team ended Meredith's seven-game non-losing streak with a 2-1 win at Pride Field today under unseasonably warm October conditions. The loss dropped the Avenging Angels to third in USA South Conference rankings.
Senior leader Jessie Davis scored first today with a breakaway goal in the 28th minute. From the middle of the box, Davis punched the ball to the right side of the net to put Meredith on the board early.
The 1-0 Avenging Angel lead held through the intermission, as Meredith out shot GC 5-0 in the first period.
After an uneventful 14 minutes passed in the second stanza, The Pride's sophomore midfielder Melanie Raton finessed a ball past MC goalie Kelsey Hopper to tie the game 1-1.
Less than 10 minutes later, Greensboro's Melanie Randoloph launched a corner kick to the far corner of the box. The Meredith defense attempted to clear the ball, but Raton found a gap and sent a header into the net.
The 2-1 GC lead held through the remaining 21 minutes of regulation as Meredith endured their first league loss this season.
Davis led Meredith with four shots, including two on goal. Megan Luke and Ila Torfin each made two attempts at the net with one apiece on goal.
Hopper added a pair of saves to her career totals in the net, and GC's keeper Jessica Thatcher managed four on the day.
The Avenging Angels travel to Maryville College Friday, October 11, for a 5 p.m. kickoff. The Scots currently sit in fourth place just behind Meredith.
Join the Avenging Angels back at the Meredith turf field Sunday, October 13, for the Kick Cancer event with William Peace University. The MC soccer team will present a gift to the Susan G. Komen Foundation just before the game in honor of Assistant Coach Ashley Riggs.
Following the match at 4:30 p.m., the team will host the 5K Run for Riggs to further support for Coach Riggs in her fight against cancer. The $10 registration fee will be donated to the Komen Foundation.
