Box Score AXTON, Va. - The Meredith College soccer team lost a hard fought battle against the Piedmont Lions in Saturday's USA South Championship match. Seniors Jessie Davis, Ila Torfin and Kelsey Hopper were joined by rookie Samantha Siomkos on the All-Tournament roster.
Tournament Most Valuable Player Laura Goodwin put the Lions on the scoreboard early Saturday afternoon off an assist from Savannah Castles at 20:06.
Minutes later Katie Zoller capitalized on a free opportunity at the net when Hopper slipped going after a ball away from the goal. The score gave Piedmont a 2-0 advantage in the 24th minute.
Just after the intermission, Avenging Angel freshman Ellice Johnson scored her second career goal to keep Meredith in the mix. Robin Moore assisted on the play.
In spite of a shift in offensive momentum in favor of the Avenging Angels, Meredith would remain scoreless the rest of the way.
Davis led Meredith with three shots, including one on goal. Hopper's four stops on the day pushed her past 300 career saves as an Avenging Angel.
Goodwin led all with four shots on goal, and starting keeper Marjorie Hammond recorded one save in her 14th win on the season.
