RALEIGH, N.C. - Meredith's Mary Lawrence Newton battled back from a 1-0 match deficit at the no. 3 singles flight to win in today's 6-3 loss to the visiting Captains of Christopher Newport University, ranked 13th in the Atlantic South Region.
The Captains (10-4, 6-0 USA South) claimed all three doubles pairings to open with a 3-0 advantage over Meredith (6-6, 3-2 USA South) in today's chilly contest.
In singles play Puja Patel jumped ahead with a 6-1 win in set one and cruised to the finish dropping just one point in set two. Caroline Hunt started strong beside Patel in the no. 2 spot, but CNU's Marion Gloor battled back to win set one 7-5 before claiming the match on a 6-3 finish.
No. 4 singles Angel Betty Edwards finished off Melisande Downs 6-1, 6-4, and Mollie Musgrave forced her pairing at no. 5 to a tiebreaker but fell 10-5.
Newton closed out the event sealing her singles win with a 10-7 tiebreaker, advantage Meredith.
The Avenging Angels travel to Ferrum College Friday for a Noon match with the Panthers. The team caps off the holiday weekend at Maryville Saturday. Doubles play is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m. in Tennessee.
