Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Meredith College and former conference rival Christopher Newport held on for a scoreless 54 minutes in day-two of the Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists Invitational at Virginia Wesleyan when heavy thunderstorms delayed the contest for more than an hour. When play resumed, the Captains cleared the way for a pair of goals to claim the 2-0 win.
Senior goalie Kelsey Hopper defended her net against seven shots in the first half to maintain a 0-0 score after 45 minutes of play.
Led by Danielle Lee, the Avenging Angels opened the second frame with four quick attempts before CNU regained control of the ball.
Another pair of saves from Hopper sent the ball back upfield for more pressure from Meredith.
The aggressive play continued, and the Captains finally found the net from five yards out on a score from Victoria Perry at 74:04.
Ten minutes later Joy Piirto offered up a pass to Bupe Okeowo for the second and final score of the match.
Hopper finished with 14 saves on the night. Captains keeper Haley Casanova fended a goal apiece from a trio of Angel rookies. Meredith McCarty, Samantha Siomkos and Victoria Tate will have to wait another day to score their first collegiate goal.
The Avenging Angels host Guilford, New Paltz and Salem in the Meredith College Classic next weekend. Action begins with New Paltz versus Meredith at Noon Saturday, September 6.
