Box Score DEMOREST, Ga. - The Meredith College (5-1-4, 3-0-1 USA South) soccer team opened the USA South weekend play with a 1-1 double-overtime tie with the Piedmont Lions (6-1-1, 2-0-1 USA South). The Avenging Angels sit atop the conference standings along with Averett and Covenant, who remain undefeated in league play.
The defensive battle saw the first goal scored by PC at the end of the opening frame. The hosts' Megan Hatfield led off in the 40th minute of the game from the rightside of the field. She gathered a pass from Katie Zoller and drifted the ball into the upper left corner of the net for a score.
Shortly after the intermission, Meredith evened the score in the 61st minute. Senior Avenging Angel Jessie Davis finished a cross from Danielle Lee for her sixth goal on the season.
A lack of scoring through the rest of regulation play forced the overtime period.
Neither team got off a shot during the first 10 minutes, and PC's keeper Marjorie Hammond defended the only shot in the final period on a header form Lee.
Davis led all with four shots, including two on goal with a score. Robin Moore attempted a trio of shots with one on goal.
Meredith's goalie Kelsey Hopper posted four saves, and Hammond tallied nine.
The Avenging Angels travel North to new USA South member Covenant College for a 5 p.m. Saturday event to close out the weekend.
