LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - A pair of Meredith College soccer rookies scored in the second period to edge the Avenging Angels past host Covenant College 2-1 in Saturday's USA South action. Meredith McCarty scored her first career goal and Meghan Ingram her second in today's win.

The Scots, now fourth in league standings, opened the scoring on a quick goal from Ruth Terry in the 14th minute of the match. She collected a pass from Andrea Hunt and chipped it over the Meredith defenders into the left corner of the goal.

Meredith joins Averett, the 2012 Conference champs, and Piedmont at the top of the USA South rankings. All three teams remain undefeated in league play.

The defensive battle ensued as neither team tallied more than four shots the rest of the period.

After the intermission McCarty dribbled past the Scot defenders on to a netter in the right corner. Danielle Lee assisted on the play.

Both keepers protected the box until Meredith's Ingram landed a gamewinner in the goal with less than nine minutes remaining in regulation. Lee picked up her fifth season assist on the play.

MC keeper Kelsey Hopper added a trio of saves to her career totals, and Covenant's Lucy Johnson tallied four.

The Avenging Angels travel next to Greensboro Saturday, October 5, for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

Plan to attend Meredith soccer's Kick Cancer game Sunday, October 13, as the Avenging Angels host cross-town rival William Peace. The first kick is slated for 2 p.m. with a 5K run and fitness walk to follow at 4:30 p.m. Registration for the run is $10 and proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in honor of Meredith Assistant Soccer Coach Ashley Riggs.
