WILSON, N.C. - The Meredith College tennis team opened the 2014 campaign Tuesday with a 9-0 loss versus Division II Barton College. With just four healthy players on the roster, the team started the day in the hole.
The Avenging Angels lost the four singles matches played. Senior Mary Lawrence Newton and rookie Cailin Goff picked up a pair of games each in their second sets.
Newton teamed up with Puja Patel to put together a strong match at No. 1 doubles. The pair lost 8-6 to Smiljana Kljajic and Ananya Sarkar.
Meredith heads South next weekend to face USA South foe LaGrange Saturday, March 1. The team will pick up a match that afternoon at Emory University before heading to Alabama to face Huntingdon.
