RALEIGH, N.C. - With a 6-3 win over Piedmont College and a 5-4 victory over the Covenant Scots, the Meredith College tennis team captured a two-match sweep in Saturday's USA South action.
No. 1 and No. 2 doubles pairs Puja Patel/Cailin Goff and Caroline Hunt/Mary Lawrence Newton held on for a pair of 9-7 wins to give Meredith a 2-1 lead heading into singles play in this morning's match versus the Lions.
Hunt, Newton, Goff and Mack Thompson claimed the singles wins to seal the win.
The Avenging Angels faced the Scots in a makeup nightcap, and Patel/Goff earned the lone doubles win to open the match.
Patel, Newton, and Goff picked up a trio of singles wins to tie the match 4-4.
To close out the match, Hunt battled back from a tiebreaker loss in set one to defeat Scot Gretchen Rowe at No. 2 singles to secure the win for Meredith.
The Avenging Angels travel next to Rocky Mount to face N.C. Wesleyan Wednesday, March 26. Doubles play is slated for a 2 p.m. start at the Slick Family Foundation Tennis Center.
