FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Meredith College tennis team lost Sunday's battle for first place in USA South standings with a 6-3 loss to the Methodist Monarchs. Taylor Brennan went 2-0 on the day for the Avenging Angels.

Meredith's Mary Lawrence Newton defeated Abigail Randolph 6-4 before losing the second set 6-2. Newton edged past the Monarch 7-6 with a tiebreaker to steal the win.

Brennan managed a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles to score Meredith's third point in the loss.

Caroline Hunt, Cailin Goff, and Thompson forced a third set in each of their matches but could not close for the win.
