ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The second-seeded Meredith Avenging Angels finished off third-seeded Covenant 6-3 to advance to Sunday's USA South Women's Tennis Championships. Meredith will face top-seeded Methodist tomorrow at 10 a.m. in a battle for the conference title.
In a set of hard-fought doubles matches, only No. 2 Puja Patel and Cailin Goff prevailed. Caroline Hunt and Mary Lawrence Newton fell 7-5 in the tiebreaker to suffer a 9-8 loss at the number two spot. The Taylor Brennan/Mack Thompson pair were edged out 9-7 at No. 3 to give the Scots a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play.
Patel and Hunt claimed quick victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to give Meredith the edge with three through six left to finish.
Newton held on for a 7-5 win in her first set at No. 3 and went on to claim a 6-1 second-set for the match. Goff and Brennan battled for a second-set tiebreaker win to claim each of their matches for the Meredith victory.
The Monarchs swept fifth-seeded Huntingdon to advance.
