Late Goal Not Enough to Prevent 2-1 Loss at Roanoke

Box Score

SALEM, Va. - In spite of a late goal by freshman Madison Mathis, the Roanoke Maroons edged out Meredith College 2-1 in Wednesday's road contest. Danielle Lee posted her fourth season assist on the play.

The Maroons jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as Ashley Barnes found the net on a cross pass from teammate Courtney Yoke in the third minute of the match.

Seconds into the second half, Roanoke's Linnea Kremer found the left side of the box to extend the host's lead to two.

RC held off the Meredith offense until Mathis and Lee paired up in the 79th minute to put the Angels on the board. Rookie goalie Jaisa Loch stopped four consecutive Roanoke attempts late in the game to give Meredith a chance.

With just seconds left on the game clock, Mathis found Sarah Varnell on a corner kick. Varnell's header hit the post to send a disappointed Angels home with the loss.

Roanoke out shot the Avenging Angels 15-8 with 10 of those shots gunning for Loch in the second period. Loch tallied nine stops on the day in her third career loss. Sarah Dvorak posted her fourth win with one save on the day.

Meredith leads the league with 30 corner kick attempts, including six in tonight's loss. Lee's assist places her atop the USA South leader board alongside of a fellow conference midfielder.

The Avenging Angels return to the home turf Saturday as Meredith hosts Mary Washington in a non-conference pairing. First kick is slated for 2 p.m.
