Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College soccer Angels avenged last year's USA South championship loss with a 2-0 win Friday over the Piedmont Lions. Seniors Sarah Varnell and Megan Amanatides scored in the second period to give Meredith the win.
MC soccer remains at the top of the league alongside Maryville and Covenant, all with a 3-0 conference record. The Covenant Scots visit Raleigh tomorrow to face off with the Angels at 4:30 p.m.
The Avenging Angels out shot Piedmont 8-5 and created five corner kick opportunities in the first half, but neither team found the net.
Meredith's first goal came in the opening minutes of the second half. The Angels managed to keep the ball in the box, and Varnell pushed it in for the score. Meghan Ingram set her up on the play.
The second goal came on a drive initiated by Danielle Lee. Lee passed to the foot of Meredith McCarty who delivered the winner to Amanatides.
Varnell's goal was her first of the season with the second for Amanatides. Lee notched her seventh season assist and leads the USA South.
