Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College soccer team defeated the visiting Salem Spirits 1-0 in Saturday's opening match of the 2014 Meredith Soccer Classic. Fourteen minutes into the second period, Danielle Lee drove to the rightside of the box and passed to Meghan Ingram. Ingram drilled the ball to the deep right corner for the eventual game winner.
The Piedmont College Lions downed the Guilford Quakers 4-0 in game two. Sunday's lineup was moved back to a 1 p.m. start due to a delay Saturday. Salem will face the Lions, and Meredith and Guilford are slated to kick off at 4 p.m.
Salem played even with the Avenging Angels in the first half with the Spirits recording six shots to Meredith's five. One of those attempts came on a breakaway by Salem's Brooke Bukas in the 29th minute. Meredith's rookie goalie Jaisa Loch handled the attempt like a veteran to keep the Spirits off the board.
The Avenging Angels' revved up the offense in the second period to outshoot Salem 10-3. Ten Angels joined in the attack with Ingram and freshman Madison Mathis posting three shots apiece. Meredith McCarty tallied a pair of shots on goal in the win.
Loch recorded five saves in her first collegiate win. Defenders Megan Luke, Anna Smither and Kaitlyn Peeples served as Loch's supporting cast to keep the Spirits at bay.
Salem's Kimmi Templeton took the loss for the Spirits with eight saves on the day.
