Box Score ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The Meredith College Avenging Angels fought a tough N.C. Wesleyan team to a 0-0 overtime draw this afternoon as they closed out the regular season. The finish preserves Meredith's undefeated record in the USA South at 11-0-1 as the Angels will be the number one seed in the conference tournament starting on October 31.
The Bishops offense started quickly out of the gate. Wesleyan took three shots in the first five minutes of play that Angels keeper Jaisa Loch turned away. After a slow start, Meredith's attacking play took over the rest of the half with eight shots before the break. Leading scorer Jessica Wallace attempted three of those shots, but the Angels would enter the break still tied at zero.
Meredith came out of the half and maintained the offensive pressure on the Bishops. The Avenging Angels attempted another seven shots in the second half, but Wesleyan keeper Vanessa Batchelor turned them away as both teams failed to score before the end of regulation.
Each team traded offensive opportunities throughout both overtime periods. Then with ten seconds left in the match, Loch made a diving save of a Nicole Liette free kick to preserve the draw.
The Angels outshot Wesleyan 17-11 and each team attempted three corners in the match. Loch tallied four saves in goal as her record improved to 13-4-1 on the season, and Batchelor recorded nine saves in goal for the Bishops.
The Avenging Angels return to action this Saturday as they host a quarterfinal in the USA South Tournament against an opponent to be determined. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. on the Meredith turf. Follow the action live HERE.
