Box Score DEMOREST, Ga. -- In a battle of the USA South women's soccer leaders, Meredith College (8-4, 6-0 USA South) upset the Piedmont Lions (12-1, 6-1 USA South) 2-1 to award the hosts their first loss of the season.
Samantha Litt led the match with three points as the Avenging Angels remain undefeated in conference play with their eighth win on the season.
Piedmont's Jazmin Penado scored on a pass from the league's offensive leader Cassidy Reich late in the first period to give the Lions a 1-0 advantage heading into the half.
A red card issued to PC just inside the 55th minute, left the Lions a man down the rest of the way, and Meredith used the deficit to their advantage. Thirteen minutes later, a corner kick from Litt led to a goal by Jessica Wallace to even the match.
The Angels secured the ball on the next possession, and Meredith McCarty's header was saved 45 seconds into the play. MC recovered the distribution from the Piedmont goalie, and Litt's attempt one minute later flew just wide of the post.
The Lions fouled during the next drive, and Litt drove in the free kick to give Meredith the lead. Goalie Jaisa Loch deflected two Piedmont attempts down the stretch to hold off the Lions for the win.
The Angels begin a five-match home series Sunday in a Kick Cancer event versus the William Peace Pacers. First kick is slated for 1 p.m. on the Meredith turf.
