RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College tennis team dropped to 1-2 overall record after falling to NCAA Division II Chowan University Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action. The Avenging Angels picked up their first doubles win of the season and earned a pair of singles matches in the loss.
Caroline Hunt and Cailin Goff defeated Chowan's Natalia Andrade and Polina Novachuk 8-4 at no. 2 doubles to give the Angels a point heading into singles play.
At no. 1 singles rookie Ran Zhang opened her match with a 6-3 set-one loss. She fought back to split sets with a 6-3 win in the second frame and finished off Natayla Kamenshchikova 6-3 in the third set for the match.
Goff struggled in her opening set at no. 4 singles and fell 6-1 to Hawk Jessica De Backre. Goff regrouped at the break and battled for a 6-3 second set victory to tie the match. She held on for a 10-8 third set finish to give Meredith a third point overall.
The Avenging Angels are slated to travel to Covenant College Friday to open the USA South season. The team moves North to Maryville Sunday afternoon to complete the weekend play.
