ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The Meredith College tennis team ended their USA South Tournament run early on a 5-0 loss to the top-seeded N.C. Wesleyan Bishops Saturday afternoon. Rain moved the match indoors midway through singles play.
After taking two matches from the Battling Bishops during the regular season, Meredith would not reach similar success during the tournament.
No. 1 doubles pair Catherine Bryant and Ran Zhang, along with Caroline Hunt and Cailin Goff at no. 2 earned five games apiece during the opening series at the Slick Family Foundation Tennis Center. But the Avenging Angels carried a 3-0 deficit into singles play.
Once the match moved indoors due to a shift in the weather, N.C. Wesleyan won the no. 5 and no. 4 singles flights to secure the win. Wesleyan advanced to Sunday's title round and will face the defending champion Methodist Monarchs.
