RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College tennis team battled for two points in today's 7-2 loss to the Bishops of N.C. Wesleyan, who remain undefeated in USA South action. The Bishops dropped just one other point in their seven previous league matches.
No. 1 doubles partners Catherine Bryant and Ran Zhang fought for every point to finish off Natalie Lopez and Maria Fernanda Orona 8-6 to give the Angels a point heading into singles play.
The top three Avenging Angels challenged the undefeated Bishops, as Bryant suffered a hard-fought 6-3, 6-4 loss at no. 1. Caroline Hunt lost her battle to Orona with the same score at no. 2.
Both team's gathered on court one to cheer on the battle at no. 2 between Zhang and Rachel Hui. Zhang took set one 6-4, but Hui rallied to tie the match on a 6-3 set-two victory to force a tiebreaker. Zhang edged Hui 10-8 for the win.
The Avenging Angels host USA South foe Methodist at 12:30 p.m. Friday afternoon. Head Coach Meredith Vincent and her squad will celebrate the four-year career of Caroline Hunt next Tuesday on Senior Day as the Angels are slated to face off with Greensboro.
