Wallace Records Hat Trick in 5-4 Loss to Bridgewater

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va.-  Meredith College lost a 5-4 heartbreaker to Bridgewater in Saturday's day one of the Washington and Lee Soccer Tournament. Freshman Jessica Wallace scored a hat trick to lead the Avenging Angels, but the effort fell short as the Eagles scored with less than two minutes remaining to take home the win.

Bridgewater set the pace early with a goal by Nikole Blackwell from a Michele Viegas corner in the 14th minute of the match. The Avenging Angels fought back as Meredith McCarty and freshman Abbie Sargent pushed the ball up field, but the Eagle defense stopped the threat.

Approaching the half, Bridgewater's Keri Rager scored an unassisted goal to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead heading into the break.

In the second period Meredith found new life as McCarty continued to push the pace for the Angels, and Wallace scored less than 10 minutes into the frame to put the Angels on the board. The Eagles quickly responded with Rager's second goal of the afternoon.

Midway through the second half, Meredith defender Kirstie King struck for her first goal of the season to pull the Avenging Angles to within one at 64:17. Wallace followed with her second and third goals of the afternoon to give MC the lead in the 76th minute.

Both teams battled as Bridgewater's Rager completed her hat trick in the 82nd minute to tie the match at fours.

McCarty continued the assault on the Eagle defense in the last 10 minutes, but Meredith's efforts would come up empty as substitute Bailey Kratz scored the game winner for Bridgewater.

The Eagles outshot MC 13-8, and both teams posted four corner attempts. Wallace converted each of her three shots on goal to lead Meredith. Bridgewater was coming off a 5-1 win over fellow USA South member Averett University, a game in which Rager recorded another hat trick.

Jaisa Loch took the loss for the Angels with four saves, and BC's Hayley Talbott earned her third win on the season in goal for the Eagles.

Meredith will look to rebound Sunday as they face tournament host Washington and Lee at 2 p.m. The Generals dropped their first game of the weekend 1-0 to Emory University Saturday. Follow the action live HERE.
