LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Lynchburg College Hornets, ranked fourth in the latest NCAA Division III national poll, handled the visiting Meredith Avenging Angels in a 5-1 finish Thursday evening. Ellice Johnson scored in the 64th minute on a 30-yard free kick to prevent the shutout.

Sophomore goalie Jaisa Loch and her defense held off the Hornets for the first 15 minutes of action in tonight's non-conference match, but Lynchburg's Morgan Singer offered up a pair of assists to send her team into the break with a 2-0 advantage.

The defending national champion Hornets opened up on the Avenging Angels in the second period with back-to-back goals, before Johnson managed to find the net for Meredith. Minutes later, Lynchburg's freshman Kennedy Jakubek scored the final point with a lead pass from Hannah Olds to finish off the Angels.

The hosts outshot Meredith 21-to-7, and Loch recorded eight saves on the night. The Avenging Angels maintained their trend with six corner attempts to Lynchburg's four.

Johnson led MC with two shots, including two on goal. Jessica Wallace and Cassie Padilla recorded one on-goal apiece, and Meredith McCarty and Olivia DeBellis each recorded an attempt in the loss.

Lynchburg's Olds led the match with three points on her two assists combined with the fourth goal on the night.

Meredith returns to their home turf this weekend playing host to the USA South's Huntingdon Hawks Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by LaGrange Sunday at Noon. Long distance fans can follow the action, including a live broadcast from Bill Zeoli, during both matches.
