Box Score Raleigh, N.C. – The soccer Avenging Angels continued their season today opening the Meredith Classic with a 1-0 win over Salem College. Senior Defender Megan Luke scored her second goal of the season with a strong header in the first half as the Meredith defense controlled the pace from start to finish.
The Avenging Angels opened the game with a strong attack by pushing the ball up field with freshman Jessica Wallace creating two early chances in the first 10 minutes. Olivia DeBellis had a strong game as she took over midfield by pushing the ball up the sideline throughout the first half. Luke continued her strong start to the season with a header that found the back of the net off of a Samantha Litt corner. The Meredith defense took over for the rest of the half as Kirstie King, Luke, and Kaitlyn Peeples kept the Spirits from any success near the goal.
Both teams came out of the half playing very physical soccer. Meredith's' defense continued to control the pace of the games as central defenders Luke and King kept Salem from getting the ball into the box. The Avenging Angel attack kept pushing throughout the half as junior Meredith McCarty and Wallace created multiple corner opportunities. The Meredith defense proceeded to close out the game when the Spirits attack turned up the pressure as they tried to even the score.
The Avenging Angels outshot Salem 14-11 and had six corners to Salem's three. Wallace continued her strong start to the season with four shots and sophomore Jaisa Loch earned her first clean sheet of the season with five saves in goal.
The second match of the day featured Hollins University and Agnes Scott College, as the Scotties won 11-0
Meredith returns to action Sunday as they host day-two of the Meredith Classic playing Agnes Scott College at 12 p.m. Hollins will face Salem in the second game at 2:15 p.m. Follow the action live HERE.
