RALEIGH, N.C. -- Defending tournament champion and the West's third seed Piedmont College handed the East Division's top-seeded Meredith College Angels a 2-1 double-overtime loss in Friday's first USA South Women's Soccer Tournament semifinal pairing. Hannah Lawrence scored Meredith's lone goal early in the match only to have the chance at the title once again stripped away midway through a second extra period.

Lawrence's point occurred during a corner kick play with Samantha Litt sending in the original pass. The Angels held on to the one-point lead into the intermission, but the Lions evened the score on a goal from Erin Bright.

Neither team would find the box through the remainder of regulation sending the semifinal into a 10 minute overtime period. Each team delivered a shot but the match would continue into a second extra period.

In the 105th minute of the game, Piedmont's Jasmine Penado utilized a passing series from teammates Sarah Weber and Bright to earn the sudden victory for the Lions.

Avenging Angel Jaisa Loch recorded her sixth season loss with six stops, and Piedmont's Cierra Belinkie collected the win with five saves on the day.

Piedmont advanced to Saturday's USA South Championship match and will challenge the West Division's top-seeded Salem Spirits beginning at 2 p.m. on Meredith's turf field.

In between today's semifinal matches, USA South Associate Commissioner Mike Christie was on hand to honor this year's conference women's soccer award recipients and regular season championship teams.
