MURFREESBORO, N.C. -- With rain in the forecast for tomorrow, the Meredith College tennis team's opening spring play day at Chowan was bumped up one day to Monday afternoon. The NCAA Division II Hawks earned a 7-2 non-conference victory over the Angels with two doubles and five singles wins on the day.
Avenging Angels Catherine Bryant and Ran Zhang battled for an 8-6 win at no. 1 doubles. But Meredith opened the match down two with a loss at no. 2 and no. 3 doubles. Jacqueline Benton paired with Laura Anne Hatcher for an 8-1 loss in the second spot, and Cailin Goff and Kate DeSilva fell 8-3 in the third.
At no. two singles Zhang held on for a two-set decision 6-2, 7-6 to give Meredith their second point on the day. Bryant made a play in set two at no. 1 singles, but fell short 6-3, 7-5 for the loss.
The Angels travel to Wilson, N.C. Thursday to face off with the DII Barton Bulldogs beginning at 2:30 p.m. Meredith opens the USA South schedule Saturday playing host to the Piedmont Lions. Doubles play is set to begin at 11 a.m.
