RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College tennis team held a 2-1 advantage at the completion of doubles play but would fall 6-3 to the visiting N.C. Wesleyan Bishops in USA South action Monday afternoon. The league's most recently named Women's Tennis Player of the Week Ran Zhang captured two of Meredith's three points to remain perfect this spring.
Cailin Goff and Kate DeSilva opened the day with a quick 8-3 win at no. 3 doubles. Zhang and partner Catherine Bryant followed at no. 1 dropping just four points versus Wesleyan's Valerie Berber and Stephany Barbera.
Laura Anne Hatcher and Jacqueline Benton battled at the second spot but were unable to finish off the Bishops.
Zhang opened her first singles set 6-4 and dropped just one game in the second frame to finish off Barbera. In the sixth spot DeSilva rebounded from a 6-4 loss in her first set to force a tiebreaker. She battled in the third, but Bishop Katie Beeman edged DeSilva 7-5 for the win.
Meredith travels to Greensboro Wednesday for a league match versus the Pride at 1 p.m. and will cap off the day at Salem with a 4 p.m. match.
