RALEIGH, N.C. -- In a battle of USA South women's tennis rivals, the visiting Methodist Monarchs claimed a 7-2 victory over Meredith College. Ran Zhang extended her streak collecting a pair of victories in the loss.
After the Avenging Angels dropped no. 2 and no. 3 doubles, Zhang and partner Catherine Bryant held on for an 8-6 finish to give Meredith a point heading into singles play. The win marks the second for Bryant and Zhang over Isabella Graf and Sam Munze this year.
Meredith dropped two more points at no. 3 and no. 5 with both Angels picking up just one game apiece. Cailin Goff battled in set one at no. 4 singles with a 6-4 loss but faded 6-2 in the second. Kate Desilva put up a 7-5 fight in set one at no. 6 singles, but MU's Riley Zopp closed out the match 6-3.
At no. 2 Zhang gave up just one game in the opening set, but Munze fought back for a 6-4 set-two win. Zhang closed out the match for her 12th consecutive victory this season.
Meanwhile on the no. 1 court, Bryant and Graf battled for an edge. Bryant forced a split in the second set, and the two pushed the limit with an 11-9 deciding set in favor of Graf.
Meredith travels south to face off with future USA South foe Agnes Scott Friday afternoon before heading to Montgomery, Ala. to open a league doubleheader Saturday at Huntingdon. The Angels match-up with the LaGrange Panthers Sunday at Noon.
