RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College tennis Angels held a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play but would not put away the visiting Covenant College Scots in Saturday's USA South action. The Scots won four singles matches to claim a 5-4 victory.
Meredith's No. 3 doubles pair of Laura Anne Hatcher and Kate DeSilva downed Jennie Spielman and Lindsay Geving 8-2 to open the scoring in favor of the Avenging Angels. Catherine Bryant and Ran Zhang added a second point with an 8-4 win at the top spot.
Zhang maintained the momentum with a two-set victory over Annie DeLuca at no. 2. Covenant claimed two-set wins at No. 4 and No. 5, but DeSilva battled back from a split to put Meredith back in front 4-3.
Both Bryant and Cailin Goff put up a 7-5 first set victory in their respective matches, but the Scots came from behind to finish off the win.
Meredith travels to Virginia next weekend for a triple-header beginning at Mary Baldwin Saturday before returning to their home court Saturday, April 9 for Senior Day. Head Coach Meredith Vincent and her team will celebrate Bryant's career just prior to the start of the Maryville match to close out the regular season.
