Lacrosse Caps Off Regular Season with 16-13 Victory Over Hornets

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College lacrosse dream season continues with a 16-13 win Saturday over the visiting Lynchburg Hornets to move Meredith to a 17-1 overall record. Goalie Katie Sills stepped up with 10 saves, including two in the final six minutes of the match to dampen any efforts of a Hornet comeback.

USA South Rookie of the Year Julie Capretti posted a game high six goals, while senior duo Katie Burnet and Victoria Doyle dominated the draw collecting a combined 15-of-24 for the Avenging Angels.

Tied on eight occasions, today's non-conference pairing was a battle from start to finish. Hornet Sarah Suter opened the scoring on the day, but Capretti followed quickly with a free position score to tie the match.

Lynchburg followed with back-to-back goals before Capretti interrupted the advance once again with a free position point. The Angels settled into a grove on the next play as Molly Miller found Burnet cutting through the lane to even the score at three, and Meredith never trailed again.

The Hornets recovered from a two-point deficit late in the first period to pull to within one at the half, but Meredith held an 8-7 advantage at the break.

After the intermission the team's exchanged goals through the first seven minutes leaving the match tied 10-10 with the Hornet's starting to find some rhythm. Meredith won the next draw but quickly turned the ball over to Lynchburg.

Hornet Maddie Koontz picked up the loose ball and drove down the field toward the cage. But Meredith rookie Tess Minnich forced a turnver to disrupt the effort, leading to back-to-back Avenging Angel goals to give Meredith some breathing room at 21:13.

Lynchburg responded with a pair of their own, but Capretti continued to attack to keep the Angels from falling behind. At 11:34 Holly Hite battled for a free position attempt and dished off to Jennifer Halvorson for the score. Capretti drove to the cage once more unassisted to finish off the scoring on the day.

Carlee Joseph tallied five points on three goals, two assists, and Halvorson finished with a trio of goals and a pair of groundballs.

Kat Francis led Lynchburg with three goals, and Caroline Carozza was a gamechanger for the Hornets with three assists.

The Avenging Angels now await selection Sunday May 8 to find out their next pairing in the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament. This marks the program's third consecutive automatic qualifier earned as the USA South Tournament Champion. Follow the journey HERE.
