Box Score DANVILLE, Va. -- In USA South women's soccer action Wednesday night, the host Averett Cougars slipped past Meredith College 3-2 to edge into the lead in the East Division. Now tied for second with both N.C. Wesleyan and Methodist, the Avenging Angels host both conference foes this weekend in what promises to be a thrilling doubleheader.
On paper, Meredith had every chance to down the Cougars. The Angels outshot Averett 19-9 and attempted six corner kicks to just one for the hosts. But Meredith had no answer for AU's senior Annalies Jobsis, who scored all three goals for the Cougars.
After Jobsis opened the scoring in the 11th minute of the match, Meredith McCarty drove past the defense to tie Averett 1-1 at 31:03. Teammate Ellice Johnson scored unassisted just over two minutes later to put the Avenging Angels in the lead.
But Jobsis netted two second half attempts to eliminate Meredith's advantage for the win.
Jaisa Loch tallied three saves in her first conference loss on the season, and AU's Bailee Brown earned her fifth consecutive win for the Cougars.
Meredith's face off with the Battling Bishops kicks off Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by a 4 p.m. start versus the Methodist Monarchs Sunday afternoon. Follow the live action HERE.
