Soccer Angels Hold On for 2-1 Victory Over Visiting Monarchs

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. -- In front of an engaged hometown crowd, the Meredith College soccer Angels avenged last year's conference semifinals with a thrilling 2-1 victory over the visiting Methodist Monarchs. Sophomore standout Jessica Wallace and rookie Hannah Elvington drove in Meredith's two goals.

Twenty-two minutes into the first half, Hannah Lawrence found Meredith McCarty down the left side. McCarty passed up to Wallace who shot from 15 yards out to find the net for a 1-0 advantage. Late in the second period Elvington rebounded an attempt from her teammate and finished off the attack in the left corner of the box.

But the Monarchs would not remain quiet. In the 83rd minute of the match, MU's Jasmine Newman put the visitor's on the board.

Led by Lawrence and Molly Thomas, the Meredith defense held off the Monarchs the rest of the way for the win.

Meredith keeper Jaisa Loch tallied three saves for Avenging Angels in her fourth win on the season, and Meghan O'Meara took the loss for MU with five stops.

The Angels travel to Virginia next weekend to face USA South Conference rival Ferrum College Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m., followed by a Sunday afternoon meeting at Mary Baldwin.
