RALEIGH, N.C. -- In Tuesday afternoon's USA South women's tennis opener, the visiting N.C. Wesleyan Bishops downed Meredith College 6-3. Gillian Emerson and Emily Wilkinson went undefeated on the day.

Emerson and Wilkinson reigned victorious in a tough 9-8 battle at no. 2 doubles, claiming the tiebreaker 7-4. The match marked the pair's first victory on the season and their first competition since February 8. N.C. Wesleyan pulled a similar win at no. 1 with a 7-2 tiebreaker to edge Cailin Goff and Jacqueline Benton. Sandra Taranhike and Sarah Du Bose fell 8-4 at no. 3.

At no. 5 singles Wilkinson battled back from a 6-1 set-one loss to tie the match with a 6-2 win in the second frame. With Wilkinson in the lead in the third stanza, Wesleyan's Manuela Cano fought for two straight games to pull to within one at 5-4. After the pair split the next two games, Wilkinson finished off Cano in the final game for a 7-5 set three victory and the match.

At no. 2 singles Emerson edged Bishop Stephany Barbera with a 7-5 tiebreaker to take the first set. She swept her opponent 6-0 for the match.

Kassidy Pitchford returned to the lineup today for the first time since early February and pushed N.C. Wesleyan's Leigh Hales to a three-set series. Hales edged Pitchford 7-5 for an early lead, but Pitchford recovered 6-2 to even the match. The Bishop outlasted Pitchford 10-6 in the third frame for the win.

Meredith travels to Virginia Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at the USA South's Mary Baldwin. The Avenging Angels close out the afternoon with a non-conference pairing at Randolph-Macon.
