Hatcher/Emerson Win Singles in 7-2 Loss to Crusaders

ORLANDO, Fla. -- No. 1 Laura Anne Hatcher and no. 2 Gillian Emerson picked up two points for Meredith College tennis Wednesday morning in a 7-2 loss to the Alvernia Crusaders. The match took place at the USTA National Campus during day two of the team's spring break trip.

After dropping the first set in her singles match, Hatcher forced a tiebreaker with a 6-2 set two score. She finished off her opponent 10-6 for the win. Emerson decided her match in two but carried the first frame to a 7-5 decision before finishing off Amanda Phillips with just one game lost in set two.

Both Jacqueline Benton and Sandra Taranhike earned set-two victories to push their singles matches to a deciding frame, but the Crusaders edged both Angels 10-7 in the tiebreaker for the wins. Emily Wilkinson battled with her opponent at no. 5 singles, but Xena Sperrazza held on for a 6-4, 7-5 victory.

Meredith's no. 1 and no. 2 doubles pairs fought hard against Alvernia, but both teams would fall 8-6.

The Avenging Angels remain in Orlando one more day for a Thursday morning contest versus the College of Saint Benedict slated for 11:30 a.m.
