Soccer Angels Advance to Quarterfinals on PKs

Box Score

DANVILLE, Va. -- The Meredith College soccer Angels advanced to the USA South Women's Soccer Tournament quarterfinals after out shooting the host Averett Cougars 5-3 in penalty kicks in Wednesday night's 0-0 overtime draw. The East Division's fifth-seed Angels will travel to Maryville, Tennessee, to face off with the West's top-seeded Scots in a Saturday afternoon contest.

With the game still tied at the end of both 10-minute overtime periods, the game moved into a series of five penalty kicks for each team. Senior Molly Thompson led off for Meredith and hit the lower left corner. AU followed with a point to the opposite side of the box. Kirstie King netted her attempt, and Cougar Eimear Reddin just missed Miranda Lutz diving to the left.

Meredith's next three kickers were rookies, and the Avenging Angels handled the pressure like champs. Lillian Fox scored her kick to the right, and Madison Thompson slipped her attempt past AU's goalie Bailee Brown. Lutz tipped the scales with a save on the Cougars fourth shot, and Annah Bishop clinched the win drilling Meredith's fifth PK to the lower right corner of the net.

Tonight's battle left fans wanting more as Meredith controlled the ball much of the 90-minute regulation with 18 shots to 10 from Averett and all seven corner kicks recorded. The Cougars amped up their attack with nine attempts during the two overtime periods. Meredith's defense blocked four shots, and Lutz stopped the other three to hold off the hosts.

Thompson led the Angels with six shots, including four on goal. Hannah Elvington, King, and Fox tallied three shots apiece, and Bishop recorded a pair, a header early in the match and a second-half shot that flew wide left of the net.

Lutz posted her second career tie in goal for the Avenging Angels with six saves, plus her most important career stop to-date during the shootout. Brown ended her collegiate career with a 5-11-1 senior season in goal for the Cougars, including 10 saves in tonight's 110 minutes of play.

Saturday's tournament match at Maryville is slated to kick off at 3 p.m. Link HERE for live action.
