RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College Avenging Angels tennis team faced off with Division II Barton College in Thursday's home opener. Under partly cloudy skies with periods of sunshine and 70 degree temps, both teams enjoyed an unusual spring-like February afternoon as the Bulldogs swept Meredith 9-0.
No. 3 doubles pair Emily Wilkinson and Logan King stole two games from BC, and Gillian Emerson and Elizabeth Johnson scored one off a tough pair in Vanessa Sanoja and Ada Vargas at the No. 1 spot.
Down 3-0 heading into singles, Wilkinson held on for a 6-2, 6-3 battle at No. 4, and Alexandra Cheney, new to the team this semester, captured two games in each set versus Jordyn Brown at the sixth spot. Emerson fought off Daria Avram to steal two games in her first set at No. 1, and King managed to pull a pair of games at four.
The Avenging Angels travel across town to Shaw University next Wednesday afternoon for a 3 p.m. match before returning to their home courts for a weekend doubleheader beginning Friday at 2:30 p.m. versus the visiting Virginia Wesleyan Marlins.
