Tennis Angels Battle in 7-2 Loss to Knights

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Meredith College tennis battled in Friday's 7-2 loss to the visiting Southern Virginia Knights. Today was the first of a tripleheader weekend for the Avenging Angels. Elizabeth Johnson and Alexandra Cheney scored for Meredith.

Meredith entered singles play with a 3-0 deficit, and Johnson and Cheney put the Angels on the board with wins on their respective singles courts. Johnson downed Audrey McBride 6-2, 6-1 at no. 3, and Cheney secured a 6-1, 6-2 victory versus Laura Elko at no. 6.

Gillian Emerson forced her match at no. 1 to a deciding set with a 6-3 win in the second, but Rachel Christensen earned the win with a 10-1 finish. No. 2 Jacqueline Benton followed suit with a second set victory to even her match with Elizabeth Fuchs, but SVU edged Benton 10-6 in the third for the win.

The Angels host USA South foes Mary Baldwin Saturday and Pfeiffer Sunday.
