Cougars Edge Tennis, 5-4

DANVILLE, Va. -- The host Averett Cougars edged Meredith College tennis 5-4 in the first USA South contest for both teams. Alexandra Cheney recorded a pair of wins for the Angels.

Cheney and partner Emily Wilkinson evened the score 1-1 in doubles play after an 8-0 win for AU on court one. Aly Henneberry and Brittney Brown battled Inka Zeilstra and Kristina Hedelt at no. 2 with a 7-5 tiebreaker for the win and the 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

The Cougars claimed courts one and four to take a 3-2 lead, but Cheney's 6-3, 6-1 victory over Rainey Townsend to even the score. Logan King maintained the momentum finishing her win 6-4, 6-2 on court six, but Eleanor Crane outlasted Henneberry on two. Brown battled for a 7-6, second-set win to force a third, but Zeilstra held on for a 6-3 finish to secure the Cougar victory.

Meredith will host William Peace Tuesday, April 2, in a home contest next week and follows with the Greensboro Pride Thursday.
