Soccer Rookies Lead a 3-0 Victory Over Knights

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Meredith College opened the 2019 season with a decisive 3-0 victory over the Knights of Southern Virginia University in the first of the two-day Soccer Classic. Rookies Morgan Thomas and Olivia Mason led the charge scoring all three goals.

Shenandoah University defeated the USA South's N.C. Wesleyan Battling Bishops 5-1 in the night cap. All four teams return Saturday beginning with the SU Hornets versus the Angels at 2 p.m., followed by NCW and SVU at 4:15 p.m. on the Avenging Angels turf.

Game Details

Hannah Omar found Thomas on a drive down field in the ninth minute of play for a 1-0 Meredith advantage. Later in the half Madison Gladwell passed off to Thomas from just right of the goal to up the Angels advantage to two.

Late in the second half, Mason launched a corner kick from the right side that curled over the line for third goal to finish off SVU.

Kaelin Sanderford recorded a shot early in the match, but the rest of the team remained quiet on the offensive end. Laurel Storheim led the Knights with 4-of-14 attempts.

Miranda Lutz stopped nine in goal for the Avenging Angels in her first win of the season and her fourth career victory. Alyssa Trueman earned the loss for SVU with three saves on the day.
