Tennis Opens with Loss to Marlins

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College tennis Angels opened the 2020 season at home Saturday with a 9-0 loss to Virginia Wesleyan University.

The two newest members of the team posted the most competitive scores on the day beginning with doubles play. Rookie Ashlyn Austin and junior newcomer and soccer Avenging Angel Amelie Gillies pushed Christine Zalameda and Anna Rogers to an 8-6 finish on court two. Austin went on to force her first set in singles action at no. 5 to a 7-6 finish, dropping the second set 6-3. On court five Gillies fell 6-3, 6-1.

On court one Aly Henneberry and Brittney Brown lost 8-4. Henneberry captured just one game in her first set at the top spot but pushed her second frame to a 6-4 finish. Brown lost 6-1, 6-3 on court two.

Alexandra Cheney and Logan King scored two points at no. 3 doubles before falling in straight sets on courts three and four in singles play.

The Avenging Angels have one full week of practice before hosting Randolph-Macon Sunday, Feb. 23, in a 1 p.m. match.
