Box Score STAUNTON, Va. -- The Meredith College women's soccer team picked up a key USA South East division victory with a 2-1 decision against Mary Baldwin at SMA Worth Field on Friday evening.
With the result, the Avenging Angels move into second place in the East division and stand at 6-3-2 overall behind a 4-1-2 record in league play. Meanwhile, the Fighting Squirrels drop to 8-5-1 for the season and hold a 4-2-1 mark in conference games.
Both sides were held off the scoresheet throughout the first half of the game before Meredith Warrick found the back of the net in the 65th minute to put the Angels ahead 1-0. Just seconds later, the Fighting Squirrels tied the game off the foot of Cyanne Harkins, 1-1.
In the 81st minute, Morgan Thomas took a pass from Claire-Emma Britt to put the visitors up 2-1 late, which held as the Angels picked up a 2-1 win.
Mary Baldwin held a 16-9 advantage in shots after outshooting the visitors in each half. Both teams earned four corner kicks on the night.
Miranda Lutz stopped six shots in the win, while Nyasia Hawkings pushed aside three shots.
The Avenging Angels have assumed the second slot in the East in the standings with two games left in the regular season. The next time out, Meredith will host first-place Methodist on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 6 pm.
