Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College soccer team finished up its regular season in a 3-0 loss to Southern Virginia in USA South action on Saturday afternoon.
Prior to the match, the team and fans honored Miranda Lutz on her Senior Day. During her career, has stood in goal for over 3700 minutes and has nine career shutouts, including four this season. She has nearly 40 career starts and has compiled 257 total saves.
With the result, the Avenging Angels drop to 6-5-2 with a 4-3-2 record in league play. Meanwhile, the Knights clinch the No. 2 seed in the East division and finish the regular season at 10-5-2 overall and 6-3 in the USA South.
Neither side could find the back of the net in the first half with the score deadlocked after one stanza.
Maybel Harris scored the first goal of the game after finding a lose ball nearly the goal line, 1-0, and just five minutes later, Delaynee McKeachnie recorded a goal to put the Knights up 2-0. SVU scored once more to set the final score at 3-0.
The visitors outshot the home side 15-3 and also held a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.
The regular season comes to an end, but with 14 points in the USA South East division, the Avenging Angels sit in a tie with Mary Baldwin, but own a head-to-head tiebreaker after picking up a 2-1 win against the Fighting Squirrels earlier this season. The Avenging Angels will clinch the No. 3 seed in the East and will travel to Covenant, the No. 2 seed in the West, on Oct. 30, in the quarterfinals of the USA South Tournament. An official announcement from the conference will come later.
