Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. -- After two weather-related postponements, Meredith College finally hosted the Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels Tuesday afternoon in the women's soccer season opener. Baldwin netted the match's only goal eight and one-half minutes into the game.
Veterans Kaelin Sanderford and Lillian Fox were joined by newcomer Mary Archer Boyd as the leading offensive Avenging Angels with a combined seven shots on goal. Senior Amelie Gillies, along with Morgan Thomas and rookie Charlotte Ward kept the ball moving up the wing and to the middle, giving Meredith 14 opportunities at a play.
But MBU's keeper Anyka Wilkin and her defensive line managed to hold back the Angels' efforts. Wilkin posted six saves on the day, and MCSC goalie Miranda Lutz stopped four in regulation. Annah Bishop led the defensive efforts for Meredith to help Lutz in the goal.
Meredith earned six corner kicks to Baldwin's two, but neither team finished a play.
The Avenging Angels travel to Methodist University Saturday night for a conference game under the lights. Follow the live action HERE.
