Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. -- Amelie Gillies scored both goals in a 2-1 victory for Meredith College women's soccer over the visiting Averett Cougars.
Both teams waited until the second period to score, beginning with the Cougars. An Angels foul in the box sent Maiju Hyvarinen to the line for a penalty kick, and she found a gap to the right of Miranda Lutz for a 1-0 AU lead at 56:08.
Just four minutes later, Mary Archer Boyd sailed a corner kick from the right side. Kaelin Sanderford put her body on it and Gillies finished off the play to even the match.
Meredith's game winner came at 72:49 when Gillies picked up the scraps at the net once again to score for the Avenging Angels.
Lutz returned to the goal for Meredith to earn the win with two stops. AU's Alyson Kinkopf recorded three saves in her fifth loss.
The Avenging Angels travel to Rocky Mount next weekend to face off with the N.C. Wesleyan Bishops. Follow the live action HERE.
