Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. -- A late goal by Kaelin Sanderford lifted the Meredith College soccer team to a 2-1 win over Randolph College at the Meredith Athletic Complex on Friday night.
The Avenging Angels (2-2) scored early in the contest as Kalin Creech recorded her first collegiate goal in the eighth minute of the game to put the home side ahead 1-0. The score looked like it was going to hold, but Randolph (2-4) tied the game with under a second left in the first half. A cross from the right-side corner flag was played into the box with under five seconds on the clock and found the foot of Marisa Santacroce who beat the goalkeeper as the horn blew to end the period. Ultimately, the goal counted and the score at the break was 1-1.
Despite dominating the stats for a majority of the game, the Avenging Angels were unable to break the goalline again. Several close chances occured during the late stretch of the final 45 minutes, including a shot from outside of the box that struck flush on the crossbar and a shot with the goalkeeper out of position that went just wide of the right post.
In the 88th minute, Rachel Johnson played a ball to the right wing that was received by Sanderford who took a shot from just beyond the 18-yard box. The ball went over the goalkeeper's head and fell in for the game-winning goal.
Overall, Meredith outshot the visitors 24-6 in the match, but each side was level with two corner kicks.
Miranda Lutz stopped one of the two shots on frame, while Alexis Bossi made five saves.
The Avenging Angels take the pitch again on Saturday, Sept. 25, as they open USA South play on the road against Averett, beginning at 1 pm. Once again, the scheduled contest with Warren Wilson that was supposed to take place on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 12 pm, has been cancelled.
