RALEIGH, N.C. - Meredith College announced the addition of
Joseph Garwood as Director of Athletic Communications / Game Day Operations.
In his new role, Garwood will oversee athletic communications and game day operations for Meredith College Athletics, including strategic communications, live event management, digital content production, statistical operations and student worker supervision. He will also play a key role in enhancing the game day experience for student-athletes, coaches and fans across Meredith's athletic programs.
"We are thrilled to welcome Joseph to Meredith College," said
Fiona Barkley, Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator. "His passion for student development, leadership experience and ability to build meaningful relationships will make an immediate impact on our athletic department and campus community."
Garwood most recently served as Director of Athletic Communications at Piedmont University, where he led all communications operations for 22 intercollegiate athletic programs and oversaw coverage for more than 150 athletic events annually. During his tenure, he supervised full-time staff members, seasonal interns and more than 30 student workers while managing departmental operations, budgeting, staffing and strategic communications initiatives.
In August 2025, Garwood was elevated to department head and direct report to the athletic director at Piedmont. He also contributed to Piedmont Athletic Communications being named the D3SIDA Region 6 Staff of the Year in 2025.
Prior to Piedmont, Garwood held athletic communications positions at Wake Forest University and Wofford College, serving as the primary media contact for numerous Division I athletic programs and assisting with NCAA postseason events.
Throughout his career, Garwood has focused heavily on mentorship and student development, training student workers and young professionals in leadership, communication and live event operations.
"I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to join Meredith College," said Garwood. "From my earliest conversations with the staff, it was clear that Meredith places a strong emphasis on the student-athlete experience, both in competition and in the classroom. I'm excited to begin building relationships with students and coaches while beginning to share the successes and tell the stories of our incredible student athletes."
Garwood earned a Bachelor of Science in History from Appalachian State University in 2015.
