Greensboro, N.C. – The Meredith basketball team swept the
Greensboro Pride for the season, defeating them 65-63 on a shot
with less than four seconds to play by Hunter Johnson. Meredith
(6-10, 5-6 USA South) won their previous meeting over Greensboro
(6-12, 4-9) 72-65 on January 6.
In the first half, Greensboro jumped out to a quick six point lead
until Meredith took their first lead with 15 minutes left in the
half. The lead then continued to bounce back and forth with the
Avenging Angels holding the two point advantage 31-29 at the half.
Bryana Holmes led Meredith in the first half with nine points going
3 for 5 from three point range.
In the second half, the Avenging Angels fell behind by nine points
but tied it up in a two minute stretch of scoring capped by Kayelyn
Rochester's three-pointer at the 10:32 mark. The second half
continued to see multiple lead changes and the game was tied at
63-all with under a minute to play. Johnson then hit a shot
assisted from Holmes from the top of the foul line with 3.5 seconds
remaining to put the Angels up at 65-63. Greensboro hit a last
second desperation shot to give Meredith the lead.
Meredith was led in the game by Megan Rahn with 16 points and
eight rebounds. Brittany Cornelius had a double-double of 12 points
and 11 rebounds. Kristin Stewart added 11 points and nine
boards.
Meredith next hosts a USA South conference weekend doubleheader
with Mary Baldwin on Saturday and Shenandoah on Sunday. Both games
are at 2 p.m. in Weatherspoon Gymnasium.
