Softball Outruns Pacers, Gain Sweep

Raleigh, N.C. - The Avenging Angels softball team completed their second sweep in two days by defeating Peace 8-2 and 5-4.

Game One: Meredith 8, Peace 2 - Peace took the early 2-0 lead with a run in the first and one in the third, but that would be all they would get, Meredith would avenge with eight runs to gain a 8-2 victory.

Meredith (15-9, 5-3 USA South) got things rolling in the third inning when Sara Cranford hit her second homerun on the year. Cranford's three-run shot cleared the 210' marker in center field and scored Kirstin Morris and Val Sherrer.

The Avenging Angels would get one more in the fifth as Morris hit a one-out triple. Morris would then score on a hit to third base by Olivia Izze.

Meredith was not done with the Pacers in the top of the seventh, as they put four more insurance runs on the board. Rebecca Leigh and Morris had one-out singles to get on base. Brittney Tucker then hit a single to center field that scored both Leigh and Morris. Tucker would then score on a error by Peace's left fielder. Arielle Stout would finish the onslaught with a single to score Gus Crist.

Beirne picked up her fifth win on the year striking out 12 and only giving up six hits in a complete game.

Game Two: Meredith 5, Peace 3 - Once again, Peace jumped out with an early lead to only see Meredith shut them down and answer back and take the win.

Meredith started the first inning off with a leadoff single from Morris. Izze moved Morris to second on a sacrifice. Morris then moved to third on a passed ball. Tucker then had an RBI-single to centerfield to score Morris. Crist then hit a double to right and Stout knocked in Tucker on a single to take the 2-0 lead. The Pacers answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs and led 3-2 after the first.

The Avenging Angels would tie things up at three-all in the third. Morris started the inning with a single and moved to second on a hit back to the pitcher by Izze. A sacrifice by Tucker moved the runners to second and third. Morris then scored on a wild pitch and tied the game.

Meredith would add two more in the fifth. Ashley Braswell hit a single to right field and Morris reached on a bunt. A two-out double scorcher to left field by Crist scored Braswell and Morris.

Meredith would close out the game and held Peace to gain the 5-3 win. Crist gained her second win on the year, coming in for 6 1/3 innings of relief pitching and holding the Pacers scoreless and striking out six.
