Burlington, N.C. - The #4 Ferrum Panthers and #5 Meredith
Avenging Angels met in both team's opening games of the USA South
Softball Tournament. Meredith took the game scoring seven in the
top of the seventh to secure the win and stay in the winner's
bracket.
Ferrum (26-15) got on the board first in the bottom of the third
putting two runs on the board. Megan Barger started the inning off
with a walk. Kashina Hancock then hit a one-out blast to left
center field to give the Panthers the 2-0 lead.
Meredith (22-15) had a late surge as the Avenging Angels were down
2-0 in the top of the seventh. It started on Olivia Izze's two-out
single to center and Amanda Beirne followed it up with a single of
her own. Sara Cranford then hit a double to right field to score
two and tie things up. Kayla Walker then singled to center field.
Kirstin Morris then singled by running out a throw to first and
Sara Cranford scored to gave the Angels the lead for good.
Meredith's onslaught in the inning finished with seven hits and a
7-2 lead.
Amanda Beirne closed things out for Meredith gaining the win and
striking out seven.
Meredith will play #1 Christopher Newport at noon on Saturday in
the winner's bracket.
