Basketball Falls in Conference Opener 75-66

Raleigh, N.C. - The Meredith basketball team welcomed USA South foe Averett University in their home opener.  The Cougars defeated the Avenging Angels 75-66.

Meredith (1-2, 0-1 USA South) held the 35-30 half time lead but could not hold off Averett (3-2, 1-0) in the second half.  Meredith out shot Averett 46% to 30 % in the first half, but the Cougars turned it around in the second as they shot 51% to the Avenging Angel's 35%.  Meredith also got into early foul trouble in the second as the Cougars entered the double bonus with 9:49 remaining in the game.

The Avenging Angels were led by Megan Rahn with 21 points and six rebounds.  Bryana Holmes and Allyson Stephenson both had eight points and four rebounds each.  Averett was led by
Kyana Smith's double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Meredith next hosts N.C. Wesleyan on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Weatherspoon Gymnasium.
