Box Score 2 Raleigh, N.C. - The Meredith softball team opened their USA South Conference schedule at home as Ferrum College came to town. The two teams split with Meredith (6-10, 1-1) USA South taking game one 5-4 and Ferrum (12-7, 2-2) winning game two 4-0.
Game 1: Meredith 5, Ferrum 4: The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning, when Ferrum pushed across four runs to take the 4-0 lead. The Panthers scored the four runs on two hits and two errors.
Meredith put on their rally hats in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jordan Zachmeyer led off with a single to center field. Jessica Dzeskewicz then reached on a fielder's choice as Zachmeyer was out at second. Kristin Piner then singled to left and Dzeskewicz advanced to second. Sara Cranford singled to load the bases. Whitney Williams pitch hit and reached on an error by the 2nd baseman, scoring Dzeskewicz. Emily Cooke then hit a towering grand slam to center field to give Meredith the 5-4 lead for good.
Arielle Stout gained the comeback win as she struck out 12 and only gave up two hits.
Game 2: Ferrum 4, Meredith: Ferrum once again scored their runs in bunches, putting four across in the sixth. The Avenging Angels could not answer and dropped the game.
Meredith returns to action on Sunday as they host Roanoke at 2 p.m. in a doubleheader.
